What was The Blue Line Challenge?

Three hundred Taiwanese and foreign young adults participated in The Blue Line Challenge in Taipei city on Saturday, May 19, 2007. For this one afternoon Taipei city was not the usual urban environment that participants walk through in their everyday lives; instead it became the backdrop for the real world story titled ‘Superstar’.

MRT subway stops represented different stages in the career of an up-and-coming singer. At each station participants were required to take specific photographs to complete challenges and progress through the storyline (See ‘Hunt List’).

In the evening there was a culminating Superstar After Party where participants had the opportunity to see other teams’ photos, meet one another and find out who won The Blue Line Challenge.

Hunt List

You and your friends are about to live through the life of a pop superstar. Each MRT stop represents a different stage in your career. At each MRT stop you will face challenges that must be completed in order to move on to the next stage in your career.
Work with your team to complete all the challenges and transform from a hard-working street performer into an international pop superstar.

Any team can complete all the challenges and become a superstar, but
only the most creative team will take the first place prize and proudly say,
“I am the number one pop superstar!”

DOES YOUR TEAM HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

You have enough money to get by, but your voice coach told you that singing in front of strangers for money is a great way
to build up confidence.
On the MRT on your way to Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall take a picture singing to strangers.

After singing for hours, you are extremely exhausted. You NEED to take a nap, but do not have the energy to climb all the
way upstairs out of the station.
Stacked Naptime: Before you climb the stairs and leave the station, lie on the ground. Stack each member on top of
each other. Have a stranger take a picture.

Now that your singing is amazing, you are told you should ‘pick up’ an instrument to complement your vocal skills.
Before you climb the stairs and leave the station take a picture with one of your teammates as a human instrument.
Example: Have everyone lift up one team member and play the flute.

You have struggled for months trying to make a living as a singer, but as of yet you have made no progress. Your boy/
girlfriend cannot take it anymore, so s/he breaks up with you. You decide to make him/her jealous by finding another guy/girl.
In front of Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall take a picture with a male or female stranger.

Not only did your boy/girlfriend give up on you, your Mom and Dad also think you are wasting your life. They yell at you
to find a REAL job.
Go to a restaurant and have an older restaurant owner take a picture with your team. Make sure s/he looks angry

During a red light take a group picture ‘giving up’ sitting on the sidewalk of a busy intersection(Be Careful!)

Just when you are about to completely give up and become a full-time tea shop worker, you get a cell phone call from a
music producer. He wants to schedule an appointment to talk.
On the MRT on the way to Zhongxiao Dunhua, take a group picture on your cell phones acting VERY happy.

Once you get off the MRT at Zhongxiao Dunhua, you run into your ex-boy/girlfriend at a bus stop. S/he realizes that s/he
made a big mistake by breaking up with you and s/he wants to get back together.
In front of a bus stop, take a group picture with a team member on his/her knees begging to the rest of the members

Your parents call and want you to meet them at their favorite coffee shop. They tell you that they believe you have learned
the value of hard work and will support you no matter what kind of career path you decide to pursue.
At a coffee shop by Zhongxiao Dunhua station take a picture of your group hugging a random set of parents.

The music producer believes that you have what it takes to become the next big superstar. To seal the deal he gives you a
strong businessman handshake.
On the MRT on the way to Zhongxiao Fuxing station, find the most ‘businessman-looking’ stranger you can and take
a group picture with one of you shaking his hand.

The music producer sees your potential as a singer, but he does not like your style. For starters he thinks you need to
change your wardrobe.
Find a clothing store in walking distance of Zhongxiao Fuxing station. Dress up one of your team members like a
pop star and take a group picture together.

You all get restless while you shop. For fun you decide to take a picture together in the store’s changing room.
Pack your entire team into a changing room and take a picture

The music producer tells you that he was able to set-up a concert for you at Zhongxiao Park. Since you are still not a superstar he does not have the money to pay other people to sell tickets and promote the event, so you have to do it yourself.
At the top of Zhongxiao Xinsheng MRT station Exit 2, take a group picture handing out fake tickets to strangers.

The big day arrives and it is time to perform during your very first concert.
Take a picture at Zhongxiao park performing. One of your team members is the singer and the remaining group
members are his/her crowd.

A few days after your concert you go to a convenience store and see a stranger reading a newspaper article about you.
You go over to talk with him.
Go to a convenience store that is not 7-11 by Zhongxiao park and take a picture with a stranger who is reading a
newspaper.

You are now a superstar. Everywhere you go people recognize you and chase you for autographs.
Take a picture of your group running from fans outside Shandao Temple.

You are a superstar, with a superstar salary. While shopping for a new cell phone a fan approaches you to ask for a signature.
Take a group picture with one member signing his/her signature for a stranger at a cell phone store by Shandao Temple.

You cannot go anywhere without being recognized. You want to get your favorite hamburger from McDonalds so you
need your friends’ help.
Pick one team member to be the superstar. Take a group picture walking through the door with the other team
members holding a jacket over his/her head so fans won’t be able to see who it is.

You have been invited to a superstar party hosted by KMall. They are very strict and will only let you enter between 4:30-4:40.
At the Taipei Main Station West Exit take a picture of your group with the KMall sign in the background of your photo.

All of these superstars in one place are really cramping your style. You decide to slip away from the party early and reflect
on your own personal success.
Go anywhere you want by Taipei Main Station and take a picture of your interpretation of success.
